Sympathy pains and pangs? Jul. 10th, 2009 @ 01:40 pm
Joanne is supposed to be the one with the weird cravings. So why do I have a sudden urge for whiskey ribs and beaver tails? This just ain't right.

Question to anyone familiar with WoW:

Approximately how many hours would you have to play in order to take a starting character to level 80?

You want to give my work to WHO!? Jul. 2nd, 2009 @ 01:29 pm
Yup, this is another worksnark post.

This time however, I had to keep the elitist misogynistic engineer in me at bay. I’m not saying that engineers are elitist or misogynistic, but I was accused of being one back in the day when I drunkenly sang happy birthday to the head of the lesbian society at the university campus pub.

Anywho…

So here I am, in the supervisor’s office, explaining where I am in my project. I currently am working on writing the manual for Toronto’s Rocket train propulsion system. Really complicated high-tech stuff. I’m juggling lots of engineering data, design specs, etc.

My supervisor is looking for ways to cut corners.

He suggests to give a portion of my work to France, our production technician.

France, for those of you who remember my previous LJs insists on calling me “MAUWRK” because English is my mother tongue and refuses to use the French pronunciation despite her herself being French and that my name is spelled the French way (Marc). I have given up arguing the point with her.

Me: “Let me get this straight boss…You want to hand over, a highly complicated, high tech portion of my work, to a woman WHO CAN’T EVEN PRONOUNCE MY NAME CORRECTLY!?!?”

Parent Fail Jul. 1st, 2009 @ 08:59 am
Last evening, Joanne and I went to a “Meet the Councilors” session at Christopher’s daycamp. In short, I was quite impressed with the councilors. They seemed very organized, and more importantly, looked like they were a lot of fun for kids to hang out with. Having worked at a daycamp myself for many years, these are the criteria I judge daycamp councilors on.

The parents at the meeting however...I cringe for some of these kids. When the councilors opened the floor for questions, a bunch of parents raised their hands. Some had some legitimate/reasonable questions…

Others…No.

Parent: “If it’s hot, do you take them to the pool?”

Councilor: “Yes, we try to take them to the public pool everyday for an hour.”

Parent: “But what about days like today when there are risk of thundershowers?”

Councilors: “Well sometimes, we can’t always take them to the pool, or the pool is closed but we have alternate water activities, like slip and slide.”

Parent: “So…will the kids get water on them?”

Councilors: “Yes.”

Parent: “Okay…but….how much water will they get on them?”

Councilor: “???”

Parent: “Because it’s really hot. You have to make sure they get enough water all over their bodies to cool them down…because it is really hot.”

Jezus Christ guy! Your kid is a kid! Not a diesel engine!.

Then there was this other gem of a mother who complained that the indoor school gym where the kids spend most of their time is not air conditioned…I felt like asking her “Ma’am…In all your years, have you EVER come across a school gymnasium here in Canada that was air conditioned!?”

No way! Jun. 29th, 2009 @ 12:15 pm
Joanne and I finished watching Battlestar Galactica. I would love to find a new sci-fi series to watch together. I was talking to [info]styrkar at lunch and I mentioned that one of my childhood favorites "Buck Rogers in the 25th century" is in bad need of a remake

A quick net search turned up this

REMAKE WATCH: BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY (2011)

http://www.scifimoviepage.com/upcoming/previews/buckrogers-remake.html

Rumors persist that director / writer / comic book artist Frank Miller is interested in doing a big screen version of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century . . .

Frank Miller doing Buck Rogers!? Go gawd! I would have never thought of that.

There's also a "Flash Gordon" and "Logan's Run" Remake in the works...

» Farrah Fawcett was on Charlie's Angels?
The death of Farrah Fawcett has once again made me realize something that has been bugging me of late.

I used to Love Charlie's Angels....Loved it, loved it, loved it! I used to watch the show religiously and it was one of the shows I begged and pleaded with Mom and Dad to let me stay up past my bed time to watch. It captivated me. The stories were cool, the women kicked ass and I especially loved it when the Angels laid some smack down on the bad guy of the week. However there was one thing that captivated me the most...If you say "The hot women?" you would be wrong because I was 8. Okay, the women on the show were the sex-symbols of the time but what captivated me the most was this Charlie dude. Who was he? Any show that used his identity as the main story-arch absolutely captivated me. I even started having fantasies about him. What if I was Charlie? What if I commanded an entourage of hot women to do anything I wanted? How cool would that be? I'd get the angels to shmooze up to my old science teacher before round-housing him because he gave me too much homework!

So imagine my surprise when I heard on the radio "Everyone's favorite Charlie's Angel is dead".

She was on Charlie's Angel? A quick net search confirmed it. She was on for one season only...but she was one of the first. How could I have missed that? I watched rerun after rerun of that show and I swear I never saw her.

That is what has been bugging me. All those 70s shows that I watched over and over as a kid. Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Wonder Woman, Six Million Dollar Man, Gilligan's Island, Love Boat, Fantasy Island, CHiPs, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century...I thought I saw ALL of the shows but it turns out, I really didn't. Somewhere, in that massive pile of DVD releases of my favorite 70's shows are about a dozen shows that to me are the equivalent of the "Rosetta Stone" of my childhood TV viewing.

Joanne is now moved in.

I went from a household of 1 to a household of 3.

Actually Christopher will only be there every other week and Joanne has entered her third trimester so…

» The big move
Joanne is moving in this weekend. The prospect is exciting for both of us. Of course there is still a lot of things to do, but I believe we have everything well in hand. I am happy. Joanne is happy. Christopher is happy. Joanne's ex on the other hand...Well he ain't so happy. I'll get to him in a minute.

Now apart from Joanne and Christopher living under my roof, I have also inherited Christopher's pet Guinea Pig. Her name is Lettuce and she's a little sweetheart. Who knew rodents could be so cute? She even purrs when you pet her. I think she has gotten used to me. I have been identified as "two-legged mammal that feeds me!". Whenever I enter the room where her cage is at in the mornings to feed her, she squeaks and stands on her tiny hind legs excitedly.

Now about Joanne's ex. I don't know who this guy thinks he is, but he is treating this move as a violation of his cushy custodial arrangement. Joanne and her ex, up until now, lived in the same neighborhood. So there was virtually no problems driving back and forth between homes. Now that Joanne and Christopher are moving across town to live with me, the ex is flipping out over how he can see his son. So what does he do? He sends Joanne an email stating that, effective immediately he is "changing" the custody schedule.

Urm...I am no lawyer, but isn't that ILLEGAL!? I told Joanne that he might try to pull something, I just didn't expect it to happen before the actual move.
» New Neighbors New to Suburbia
I have new neighbors. Philippe and Pascale. When they first moved in a couple of months ago, they introduced themselves and they struck me as a nice, polite young couple who are just starting to get their feet on the ground. Everytime we saw each other, we would smile and nod.

I don’t think however, they are used to suburban living. Specifically, living in Brossard. Philippe, spends most of his time doing back-breaking work in the garden. Now for those of you unfamiliar with Brossard geology, Brossard is the first suburb south of Montreal and closest to the St-Lawrence river bed. Much of Brossard used to be a swamp. Therefore, if you dig more than 5 inches into the earth, you hit clay. Philippe and Pascale found this out the hard way. Their gardening project is quite ambitious. It’s something akin to a Japanese zen garden which I would love to see them complete but as you can imagine, it is a monstrous task. They both seemed to be having a good time at first but I suspect Pascale has given up leaving Philippe to try and complete the project on his own. He must be at his wits end because the other day I saw him digging into the ground with a pick axe. It’s like watching a prisoner doing his penance.

At the same time, Philipe and Pascale have taken on another major project. The roof of their house extends over their driveway only part way. I think Phillipe and Pascale got the idea to extend it so that it covers the whole width of the driveway. This means they have to move the two support columns…which requires more digging. I got a glimpse of their handywork when I was mowing the portion of my lawn facing their property. They have dug a trench which is not very deep due to the hard clay. Obviously, they are having a hard time with this too. Whether or not they have given up on this little home improvement project is a mystery.

They also bought themselves a dog. It looks like a four year-old brown Labrador. It’s cute but lately has become accustomed to using my lawn as his toilet. When I discovered this, I chose to be nice. I cleaned up piles of pasture patties and then I went to talk to them about it. I told them I don’t mind the dog pooping on my lawn, so much as they clean it up. I only spoke to Philippe who was very apologetic and said that he will make sure my lawn is cleaned up next time it happens. That’s were the conversation ended. He said he was sorry and that was good enough for me. Pascale however, has been giving me the cold shoulder. Normally, when we cross paths, she would look up, smile and say hello. Since I warned them about their dog pooping on my lawn however, she won’t even look my way. I realize that her cold shoulder may not have anything to do with that but still,…It makes me wonder if these folk are cut out for suburban living.
» The end of the vampire room...
This is quite likely the last entry I'll be making from my home office, AKA "the vampire room". The RPG books have been boxed, the vampire posters and paraphenelia have been removed and soon, this computer and the desk it sits on will be dismantled and moved. Actually if this computer works any slower, there is a good chance I'll shot-putt this hunk of junk into the street...I'll probably get more entertainment out of it that way.

Yup, the vampire room shall turn into a nursery, which is ironic if you think about it because that is what this room was originally designed for. This shall be baby's new home. Speaking of which, Joanne and I still haven't had the chance to come up with a name. We have both been incredibly busy, and somewhat scatterbrained. Thankfully, Joanne and I made a list of things we need to do and naming the baby is on that list...So by the time we get around to it, our baby's name for the moment is "List Item 61".

Hmmm...Kind of has a nice ring to it, like "Seven of Nine". Speaking of Star Trek, if you haven't seen it LJ-Flisters, go see it. Doesn't matter if you are a fan, a Trekie, a Treker, a geek, non-geek or a geek in denial. It's got something for everyone.

Damn, I am so scatter brained at the moment. Of course, the meds I am taking to fight this damn cold isn't helping my chain of thought either. I have a about a dozen other subjects to write about, but it is getting late and I don't want to make this post a tl;dr.
